FAQ
Common questions about self-hosting, activation, Nostr chat, zaps, and backends.
LFL is self-hosted livestream software. You run it on your own domain and server, and it can connect to Nostr for chat/zaps and to streaming backends for delivery.
For full control, yes. LFL is designed for people who want to own their setup and not depend on a platform. You can run it on a VPS or dedicated server and point your domain to it.
Activation is a simple daily unlock for live features (like chat, zaps, and certain streaming tools). It’s designed to reduce spam/abuse and help cover ongoing development and infrastructure costs.
It is not a subscription. You activate only when you want to stream. When you’re not activated, the site can still be used — some live-only features stay locked.
The activation amount can change over time. The current value is shown where activation is offered.
Yes. LFL is built around Bitcoin and Lightning for payments and zaps. Bitcoin/Lightning payments are generally irreversible.
Chat uses Nostr. Viewers typically need a Nostr-capable wallet/extension or client to post messages. Streamers choose which relays to listen to for comments.
Viewer-only pages can still display chat even if the viewer can’t post.
Nostr is relay-based. If a viewer posts to relays the stream isn’t monitoring, their messages may not show up. LFL makes it easy to publish/listen on chosen relays.
A backend is the service that receives your stream ingest (RTMP/SRT/etc.) and delivers playback (HLS/Web). Different backends can have different speed, latency, reliability, and features (like VOD/recordings).
Backends are third-party services and may change, fail, throttle, or restrict access at any time.
LFL can support recordings/VOD depending on the backend you connect to. Some backends offer recording features, others are live-only.
You do. Your content lives on your domain, and your community can follow you through Nostr. LFL is built to avoid platform lock-in.
Official announcements and support are provided through the community and your official channels.
